Echo, in her new home
Stories like this make it all worth while for us.
'Getting a new pet is a very big decision. We had previously had two dogs and a cat. Unfortunately, within six months, we lost all of them - two of them to cancer and one to very old age. We had them since they were tiny babies and it was so sad when they passed away. At the time, you feel you can never love another animal.
As time passed, the quietness and stillness in the house became more and more apparent. Even though we have a toddler, I missed the companionship of a loving pet. I started looking on the net at animals for adoption and, over a couple of months, a beautiful cat took my eye. I was excited but so hesitant to enquire, because I felt I was betraying my old pets, who had been such a wonderful part of our family. I was frightened that maybe I could not love another pet the same. However, I kept checking the internet and saw that Echo was still listed and finally I made the decision to apply.
I was so pleased when I was contacted and had the opportunity to meet her. I knew she would be a perfect match for us.
There have been many tears, as she brings up memories of our dear old cat. Simple things like buying cat food again made me cry.
As each day passes and Echo moulds herself to our hearts, we are noticing the similarities but we are also ensuring we notice her differences as well and treat her as her own cat. It is funny how nervous we were about bringing home a cat; it felt like we might have forgotten how to take care of one, but it all came back as soon as she arrived and the routine requirements fitted in easily.
We were really grateful for the advice and home visit from Victorian Dog Rescue, to ensure we were well prepared and had a safe environment for Echo. No matter how long you have had animals, you can always learn something new. Importantly, that many indoor plants are not safe for cats.
Echo is gaining confidence every day and I love finding her in new spots that she is discovering and claiming as her spots. She now also looks at me out the window as I drive away and it is very reassuring to know there is someone there who will be waiting to welcome me home. She has been so well behaved, we really love her and we know she loves us too.
I feel so proud to have been selected to provide a forever home for a special cat who was rescued from a very uncertain fate'.
