Foster an animal, save a life.
We are asking for your help – we are in desperate need of foster carers– are you willing to open your heart and your home to an animal in need?
In order to carry out our mission and save animals, we need foster parents to provide a safe, loving home for a cat or dog until a permanent, adoptive home is found. Fosterers provide the love, training, socialisation and food that these rescue animals require.
The number of foster homes is directly proportionate to the number of animals we can save. It’s that simple.
About our foster animals
Many dogs and cats end up in pounds through no fault of their own. Their owner may not be able to keep them any longer due to changed circumstances, they may have been lost and not located, or they may have simply been not wanted. Unfortunately, many people in our community regard dogs and cats as disposable items.
Some of these animals are happy and friendly and untouched by their experiences. Some become timid and insecure. Some are toilet trained, some are not. When you foster for an organisation such as ours, we supply 24-hour support and, if for any reason there is a problem, we will provide you with complete backup and guidance. All vet bills and extra expenses are paid for by Victorian Dog Rescue.
A shelter environment followed by a rescue can be very stressful and traumatic for many animals. In your home, they will have a chance to feel safe and secure, to be loved, nurtured, exercised and socialized.
About foster carers
Foster carers are people who want to help animals and have the many benefits of their company. Generally, fosterers provide food and give them TLC in a home environment. They then advise the group on the animal's personality, the good points and any negative ones and provide photos. We then advertise the cat on our websites, on PetRescue, posters, Facebook etc... and match the animal to the right adopter.
We work hard to find the right home for your foster pet from the moment they are rescued. Foster animals may stay at their temporary homes from a few days to weeks and sometimes even months. Foster families may be asked to show their foster animal to potential adopters. Nice photographs and good descriptions from the foster family are invaluable in helping animals be adopted.
Fostering can be an incredibly rewarding experience - to see the look of trust and growing confidence in someone who has been rescued from death row, and to watch them move in with a person who will love and care for them. The advantage of being a foster carer for a smaller rescue group such as us is that we allow you a large input into where your foster cat goes.
Homeless animals come into shelters year round so we are always in need of foster homes. When we take a dog or cat from a shelter, it makes room for the next animal in need. Our foster parents are a critical piece of the rescue process and we are deeply indebted to them for their willingness to welcome new members into their lives. It buys us time to find a new place for the animals to call home.
Foster with a View to Adopt - It happens!
You fall in love with the wonderful cat or dog you have been fostering. Not to worry. You’re in good company.!
As the foster family, you will usually have first option to permanently adopt your new family member to be part of your lives, for life.
